It is often said that we gain wisdom as we age. Hopefully that is true for most of us. Wisdom can be described as a journey of the mind, acquiring profound insights from our daily experiences, those golden nuggets that touch us deeply along our journey. We keep the good and cast away what is not beneficial to our wellbeing. The sources of wisdom are many, and include: the way we spend our time, the people we allow into our lives, the self-discipline we learn, how we treat others, and the value we place on our relationship with God.
What is some of the valuable knowledge that we can learn from our journey: God has to be the No. 1 priority in our life, tell our spouse we love them every day, raise our children to know and love God, spend quality time with family and friends, carefully select the people in our lives that share our values, show love and not judgment to everyone we meet, and spend time growing our relationship with Jesus (our Savior).
One could say that we embrace spiritual wisdom when we allow God to direct our life, our thoughts and actions. James 1:5 says: “But if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly and he will be given it.” This wisdom is available by asking the Holy Spirit for this gift. The Holy Spirit inspired the writers of the Bible with the wisdom they needed, and He is willing to offer us the wisdom we need to fulfill the mission we were created to accomplish in our lifetime.
We are given the ability to distinguish the promptings of the Holy Spirit from that of the world around us. Quiet meditation and prayer help us with this discernment. The Holy Spirit desires to instill in us an understanding of the Truth [Jesus Christ’ teaching] and lead us on a path of holiness, which would increase within us over time.
And since the Holy Spirit guides us in our day-to-day life, He becomes our “go to” person to ask when we need to make the right decision in a particular situation or what words to say to someone in order to help them, and hopefully not offend them with words that come from our heart. Now with the Holy Spirit walking with us, we can go forward in trust and hope.
