These were the last words that Mary ever spoke in the New Testament when she asked the servants to follow Jesus’ directions for creating more wine for the couple that had run out of wine during their multi-day wedding in order to save them embarrassment.
Here was the scenario where Jesus ended up performing the first miracle of His public ministry: Mary, Jesus and His disciples were attending a wedding feast at Cana in Galilee, when Mary noticed that they were running out of wine. So she told Jesus about the situation, and He told her in John 2:4, “Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet come.” Without any further words to Jesus, we hear her words in John 2:5 to the servants at the wedding feast, “Do whatever he tells you.” Her last words in the New Testament offer us her first example of intercession before her Son.
Because she is so highly favored by God, she now has great power of intercession before the throne of God for us her children. All the Heavenly gifts from her Spouse, the Holy Spirit, pass through her virginal hands, which is the will of God. Grace from Heaven comes to mankind through her intercession.
The Memorare prayer reminds us that we have an advocate in Heaven always ready to help us, before her Son, when we call upon her help in our daily lives or those of our family and friends:
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of Virgins, my Mother. To thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy, hear and answer me. Amen
Mary understands the difficulties we encounter in these turbulent times, and wants to help us overcome our difficulties and prepare us for Heaven, and the way to that eternal place is through Jesus. Just as Mary told the servers at the wedding feast to “do whatever He tells you,” she is reminding us to do the same in pointing us to Him.
Jesus cannot refuse any request from His mother. In St. Louis de Montfort’s book “True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin,” he gives a wonderful example of her intercession, which is why we should consider offering our earthly requests to Jesus through His mother:
Suppose you wanted to give the gift of an apple to a king. You presented it to him, and he looked at it and said, this gift is not worthy of a king and threw it aside. But if you gave your apple to his queen, and she prepared it beautifully and placed it on a gold platter. When she gave it to the king, he would gladly accept the gift. We know that Mary presents anything we give her to Jesus, without keeping anything for herself.
